The South African Mathematics Olympiad is the biggest Olympiad in the country. Almost 100 000 learners participated in the 2017 Olympiad.

The first round is written in March. The junior division consists of separate papers for grades 8 and 9 and the senior division of one paper for grades 10 to 12. Each paper consists of 20 questions with multiple-choice answers and learners have one hour to complete the paper. Each school is provided with the solutions. For this round, the teachers mark the papers.

Learners who attain 50% or higher in the first round qualify for the second round which is written in May. There are separate papers for the juniors and seniors. This time the grade 8 and 9 learners write the same paper. Learners have two hours to complete twenty questions.

The best 100 senior and junior learners from the previous round qualify for the third round.

It is well known that mathematics competitions generate a lot of enthusiasm and curiosity for the subject. This aspect of mathematics competitions is becoming more and more important. The school subject called 'Mathematics' has recently moved more and more to what could be called mechanical calculations or numeracy. It is therefore very important that we continue to emphasize that Mathematics is about thinking and the discovery, and validation, of problem solving methods.

Every participant in the SAMO papers will be challenged by at least one problem and hence his or her problem solving skills will improve. Problem solving skills can be further improved by carefully working through the solutions of these rounds. We present alternative and innovative solutions and we recommend that the problems used in our papers be used as resources for classroom discussion.

Creative problem solving skills are very necessary and very marketable in today's technically oriented market place. This market place is now global and South Africa needs to be very competitive. Hence we need expert problem solvers. Practice in problem solving will help to train our future leaders of technological development.

Educators are encouraged to enter as many learners as possible for the SAMO.

The Junior Mathematical Olympiad is a follow-on round to the Junior Mathematical Challenge. It is a two-hour competition consisting of 16 problems: 10 in Section A and six in Section B. Edit photo mac preview. Only answers are required to the problems in Section A whereas full written solutions are required for problems in Section B.

We invite around 1200 qualifying students from the Junior Mathematical Challenge to take part in the Junior Mathematical Olympiad. Invitations to participate in the Junior Olympiad will be clearly indicated in your results from the Junior Mathematical Challenge. Students who have missed the qualifying threshold and therefore do not receive an invitation may be entered into the competition at the discretion of their school.

The competition materials, whether hard copy or made available online, will be provided at least several days before the competition.

How do I take part?

The competition is by invitation (to candidates scoring above a certain threshold, which is variable from year to year) and those entered at the discretion of their schools via the order link on this page.

What happens after the Junior Mathematical Olympiad?

Each qualifying student receives a Certificate of Qualification and the top-scoring 25% of participants each receive a Certificate of Distinction. Candidates who make a good attempt at Section B of the paper receive a Certificate of Merit.

The top 50 or so scorers will be awarded a book prize; the title varies from year to year. Pearson grade 8 math textbook online.

We award medals on a different basis to certificates and prizes. The medal-awarding score is calculated as the score from Section A plus the scores of 5 or more for Section B problems. (Section B marks of 4 or less will not count towards the medal-awarding score.) Each of the top 30 scorers receive a gold medal, the next 60 a silver medal and the next 120 a bronze medal.

How can I prepare for the Junior Mathematical Olympiad?

Teachers can use past Junior Olympiad papers as a source of high-quality problems to encourage their students to think mathematically and to prepare for the competition. We are delighted to be working with DrFrostMaths to help teachers use past problems in the classroom.

We also sell downloadable past papers and books which can help students to prepare for our competitions.
